Implementation of Polymer Fibers for the Container Terminal in Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria

The main objective of the project was to construct a robust and durable concrete slab for the container terminal. The use of polymer fibers in the concrete mix aimed to enhance the strength, durability, and crack resistance of the concrete, ensuring optimal performance under heavy loads and traffic conditions.

Project Details

  • Client: Dhollandia
  • Location: Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Construction Period: August 2021
  • Container Terminal Area: 2000 m²
  • Concrete Slab Thickness: 350 mm
  • Concrete Class: C30/37
  • Macro Fiber Used: ArmoTec 40mm
  • Fiber Dosage: 3.0 kg/m³

The use of ArmoTec macro fibers in the concrete slab offers numerous advantages:

  1. Increased Flexural Strength: The polymer fibers effectively distribute internal stresses in the concrete, enhancing its flexural strength and minimizing the risk of cracks under heavy loads and dynamic forces common in container terminals.
  2. Crack Control: By reinforcing the concrete matrix, the polymer fibers inhibit crack propagation, reduce the risk of structural damage, and minimize the need for future maintenance or repair work.
  3. Improved Durability: Adding polymer fibers significantly enhances the concrete’s durability, making it more resistant to abrasion, impacts, and environmental influences such as freeze-thaw cycles, chemical exposure, and temperature fluctuations.
  4. Enhanced Workability: The ArmoTec macro fiber improves the cohesion and workability of the concrete mix, facilitating placement and ensuring uniform distribution of fibers throughout the slab.
  5. Reduced Construction Time: Using polymer fiber reinforcement eliminates the need for traditional steel reinforcement, simplifying the construction process and reducing installation time and labor costs.
