Fiber-Reinforced Concrete for the Palfinger Truck Site and Warehouse in Cherven Bryag, Bulgaria

Heavy-duty truck sites and industrial warehouses require concrete pavements capable of withstanding frequent vehicle traffic, concentrated wheel loads, impact, and repeated mechanical stresses. For the construction of a truck site and warehouse in Cherven Bryag, Bulgaria, a fiber-reinforced concrete solution was selected to provide reliable structural performance while simplifying the reinforcement process.

The project was carried out by Strabag for Palfinger, with Conix Trade also involved in the project. The total constructed area, including the road and warehouse sections, covered approximately 5,000 m².

To reinforce the concrete slabs, the project incorporated ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber at a dosage of 3.0 kg/m³. The fibers provided three-dimensional reinforcement throughout the concrete, helping control cracking and improve the performance of the pavement under intensive operational loads.

Project Specifications

The project consisted of two main areas: a concrete road and a warehouse floor.

Road

  • Location: Cherven Bryag, Bulgaria
  • Facility: Truck site and road
  • Total project area: Approximately 5,000 m², including road and warehouse
  • Concrete slab thickness: 200 mm
  • Concrete grade: C30/37
  • Fiber reinforcement: ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber
  • Fiber dosage: 3.0 kg/m³
  • Saw-cut expansion joints: 6 × 6 m

The 200 mm concrete slab combined with C30/37 concrete and ArmoTec macrofiber reinforcement was designed to provide the necessary durability and load-bearing performance for regular truck traffic and other operational activities.

Warehouse

  • Facility: Industrial warehouse
  • Concrete slab thickness: 210 mm
  • Concrete grade: C35/45
  • Fiber reinforcement: ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber
  • Fiber dosage: 3.0 kg/m³
  • Saw-cut expansion joints: 6 × 6 m

The warehouse floor used a higher-strength C35/45 concrete grade and a 210 mm slab thickness to meet the increased structural requirements of the indoor industrial environment.

Fiber Reinforcement Solution

ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber was selected as the primary reinforcement solution for both the road and warehouse slabs.

The fibers were used at a dosage of 3.0 kg/m³ of concrete. Once incorporated into the concrete mix, the macrofibers became evenly distributed throughout the slab, creating a three-dimensional reinforcement network.

This reinforcement approach improves the concrete's ability to withstand tensile stresses after cracking, while helping control crack development caused by shrinkage and operational loading.

Using the same macrofiber dosage for both sections also provided a consistent reinforcement solution across the project while allowing the concrete mix and slab thickness to be adapted to the specific requirements of the road and warehouse.

Conclusion

The resulting fiber-reinforced concrete solution provided effective crack control, improved post-crack performance, and a simplified reinforcement process, making it suitable for the demanding operational conditions of a modern truck site and industrial warehouse.
