Implementation of Polymer Fiber for Container Terminal in Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria

The primary goal of the project was to construct a robust and long-lasting concrete slab for the container terminal. The use of polymer fiber in the concrete mix aimed to improve the strength, durability, and resistance to cracking of the concrete, ensuring optimal performance under heavy loads and traffic conditions.

Project Details

  • Customer: Dhollandia
  • Location: Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Period of Construction: August 2021
  • Container Terminal Area: 2000 m²
  • Concrete Slab Thickness: 350 mm
  • Concrete Grade: C30/37
  • Macrofiber Used: ArmoTec 40mm
  • Fiber Dosage: 3.0 kg/m³

The utilization of ArmoTec macrofiber in the concrete slab offered numerous advantages:

  1. Increased Flexural Strength: The polymer fibers effectively distribute internal stresses within the concrete, enhancing its flexural strength and minimizing the risk of cracking under heavy loads and dynamic forces commonly experienced in container terminals.
  2. Crack Control: By reinforcing the concrete matrix, the polymer fibers inhibit the propagation of cracks, reducing the likelihood of structural failure and minimizing the need for future maintenance or repair work.
  3. Enhanced Durability: The addition of polymer fibers significantly improves the durability of the concrete, making it more resistant to abrasion, impact, and environmental factors such as freeze-thaw cycles, chemical exposure, and temperature fluctuations.
  4. Improved Workability: The ArmoTec enhances the cohesiveness and workability of the concrete mix, facilitating ease of placement and ensuring uniform distribution of the fiber throughout the slab.
  5. Reduced Construction Time: The use of polymer fiber reinforcement eliminates the need for traditional steel reinforcement, thereby simplifying the construction process and reducing installation time and labor costs.
