Construction of the Dhollandia Container Terminal Using ArmoTec Polypropylene Macrofiber

High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete for the Dhollandia Container Terminal

Project Overview

Modern container terminals are subjected to continuous heavy-duty loading from trucks, forklifts, and cargo handling equipment. To ensure long-term pavement durability, the construction of the Dhollandia container terminal in Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria required a concrete slab capable of resisting cracking, impact loads, and repeated traffic without the need for conventional steel mesh reinforcement.

Completed in August 2021, the project covered a total area of 2,000 m². To improve structural performance and construction efficiency, the design incorporated ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber, providing three-dimensional reinforcement throughout the concrete slab.

Performance Requirements for the Terminal Pavement

Container terminals experience demanding operating conditions due to constant vehicle movement and concentrated wheel loads. The pavement design focused on achieving the following objectives:

  • High Load Capacity: Supporting container handling equipment and heavy transport vehicles operating throughout the terminal.
  • Crack Control: Minimizing plastic and drying shrinkage cracks across the concrete surface.
  • Long-Term Durability: Maintaining structural integrity under repeated loading and varying environmental conditions.
  • Efficient Construction: Eliminating traditional steel reinforcement to simplify installation and reduce construction time.

Project Specifications

The concrete pavement was engineered to deliver reliable long-term performance while meeting the operational requirements of the container terminal. The primary construction parameters included:

  • Location: Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Project Completion: August 2021
  • Facility Type: Container Terminal
  • Total Area: 2,000 m²
  • Concrete Slab Thickness: 350 mm
  • Concrete Grade: C30/37

The 350 mm slab thickness, combined with C30/37 concrete, provided the structural capacity required for intensive industrial traffic while ensuring excellent resistance to mechanical stresses throughout the service life of the pavement.

Fiber Reinforcement Solution

To replace conventional steel reinforcement, the project utilized ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber at a dosage specifically selected to satisfy the structural requirements of the pavement.

Dosage Rate: 3.0 kg/m³

The macrofibers were uniformly distributed throughout the concrete mix, forming a three-dimensional reinforcement network that enhanced post-crack performance, reduced shrinkage cracking, and improved the overall toughness of the concrete. The selected dosage of 3.0 kg/m³ provided effective crack control while maintaining excellent workability during concrete placement.

Construction Execution

During production, ArmoTec macrofibers were added directly to the concrete mix at the batching plant to ensure consistent dispersion throughout every cubic meter of concrete. The fiber-reinforced concrete was then transported to the construction site, where it was placed, compacted, and finished using standard industrial paving techniques.

By eliminating the installation of welded steel mesh, the construction process became more efficient, reducing labor requirements while allowing faster placement of the large concrete sections. The finished pavement provided a smooth, durable surface suitable for continuous operation within the container terminal.

Project Results and Advantages

The implementation of ArmoTec polypropylene macrofiber delivered several significant benefits for the Dhollandia container terminal:

  • Reliable Crack Resistance: Three-dimensional fiber reinforcement effectively controlled shrinkage cracking throughout the 2,000 m² concrete slab.
  • Improved Structural Performance: The fibers increased residual tensile strength and enhanced the slab's ability to withstand repetitive industrial loading.
  • Reduced Construction Time: Eliminating steel mesh simplified the reinforcement process and accelerated project completion.
  • Lower Maintenance Requirements: Improved crack control and durability contribute to a longer pavement service life with reduced repair needs.

Conclusion

The successful construction of the Dhollandia container terminal in Stolnik, Sofia, Bulgaria demonstrates the effectiveness of ArmoTec 40 mm polypropylene macrofiber in heavy-duty industrial pavement applications. Using a 350 mm concrete slab, C30/37 concrete, and a dosage of 3.0 kg/m³ of macrofiber, the project achieved a durable, cost-efficient, and high-performance concrete solution capable of meeting the demanding requirements of modern container handling operations.
